When you've drafted a Customer Problem Statement, do this exercise to sharpen and improve your draft.

Activity Prompt

I'm trying to draft a Customer Problem Statement for my startup. Ask me to share my draft, and then evaluate the draft using the following rubric, giving me specific feedback to help me improve my draft. DO NOT offer to write a new version of the draft - leave that to me.

* Does it begin with a clear description of who the customer is, including at least 2-3 specific characteristics about them?

* Does it clearly state the desired outcome the customer is trying to achieve? 

* Does it avoid implying or describing a solution?

* Does it describe the customer's specific pain point, problem, or barrier in clear, specific language?

* Does it explain the root cause of the pain point or barrier? Does the explanation go deep enough into the "why" of the c?

* Does it explain specifically how the pain point, problem, or barrier makes the customer feel, using emotional language?
